Carry On Europe: Jonathan Coe and Robert Menasse
19.00 28 Feb 2019

Jonathan Coe’s Middle England returns to the cast of The Rotters' Club and The Closed Circle. Beginning eight years ago on the outskirts of Birmingham, where car factories have been replaced by Poundland, and in London, where frenzied riots give way to Olympic fever, it follows the characters through a time of immense change.

The Capital by Robert Menasse, expertly translated from the German by Jamie Bulloch, is at once a sharp satire, a crime story, a comedy of manners and a philosophical essay. Published on the eve of Brexit, at its heart is a powerful pro-European message: no-one should forget the circumstances that gave rise to the European project in the first place.

Don't miss the chance to hear these two award-winning novelists discuss their latest novels, the relationship between Britain and Europe and how fiction can cast a light on contemporary issues. The event will be chaired by the Literary Editor of the Financial Times, Frederick Studemann.

Location: All Saints Church, Lovelace Rd, SE21 8JY

The event will start promptly at 19.00 and finish by 20.30

Price: £10 (admission & glass of wine)
£20 (admission, copy of The Capital by Robert Menasse & glass of wine)

I do hope they are able to make the distinction between being pro-EU and being pro-Europe - something the Metropolitan elite seem unable to comprehend....
