I have just had my wedding reception at the Dulwich Picture Gallery and I can not recommend it highly enough. We used the cafe and the food, service and staff were all amazing. We supplied our own alcohol which made it a lot cheaper (although there is a corkage) and the money for the hire is minimal compared to other London venues, and it's a charity.
Good luck.

Basically, it seems it is up to west dulwich to get active and present our issues to the dulwich society. I feel a little bit pissed off that it seems we're all paying to keep the village nice.

Did you know that the sports clubs and schools on dulwich common are on public land and that land belongs to the public. 5 acres of land for one nursery that should be open for public use.

One of the listed thing the dulwich society do is to ensure "pleasant walking" by ensuring decent pavements. I feel west dulwich is being used to fund other areas. This needs addressing.

In my experience the Estate is not at all interested in the upkeep of the area - they certainly don't have any local council type obligations. The Estate is a charity whose function is to look after the Estate to generate income for Dulwich College and its associated schools. The land that comprises the Estate is subject to restrictive covenants which the Estate enforces to maintain the character of the area but they will not proactively do anything else to enhance the local area. In fact, as I think we all know, they will not really proactively do anything to even ensure that the covenants are complied with - they rely on people notifying them of works they want to do, or whistleblowers dobbing in people who might not have complied.

When trees were being felled around WD railway station a number of us tried to get the Estate interested to do something but they would not. It seems better to try and go through the Dulwich Society who try and apply pressure to the Estate but again without much success to my mind. The Estate and Society have websites which are worth checking out - the Society's one has minutes of a meeting with the Estate where a number of issues were raised and its worth reading as it gives a flavour of their approach (http://www.dulwichestate.co.uk/index.cfm; http://www.dulwichsociety.com/). It's true to say, though, that the Society's focus tends to be on the Village and not on WD so it might be worth trying to get them more interested in the local area. The Society publish a quarterly magazine - £10 annual subscription - sometimes useful for keeping up with what's going on if you can't be bothered to check their website regularly.

I'm actually quite interested in actively chasing up the dulwich estate on what it is actually bringing to the area. Fair enough I like the lack of kfc in the area and I do like the general calm of the place but I would like to spend more of my time here instead of taking my money elsewhere and investing in somewhere else. Putting aside my reservations about what is already on offer, there does seem to be a resounding hub and mild discontent regarding the lack of care given by the dulwich estate to west dulwich.

I pay council tax and expect to see the garbage gone and street lights etc, I pay the dulwich estate and I'm not sure what I get because I have to pay more to maintain my tree and area myself. Honestly the pavements round here are quite bad. They work but they are not nice. There is a rat problem and in the croxted road tesco cafe rouge area that doesn't seem to be improving. The old dairy could be used to house a decent nursery or provide more useful shops for the area. As others have said its a neglect. How about some organized questioning of the estate.
The block containing Tesco, linked to the old dairy site (see the other thread) is owned freehold by......Dulwich Estate. They moved the bins for the residential tenants out of the service yard and onto the public pavement as Tesco (DE's tenant) complained about the filth and vermin gathering around the back of their shop. The legality of this is questionable but this weekend a publicly spirited person from one of the flats (presumably another tenant of Dulwich Estate) has seen fit to empty the content of their flat onto the pavement by the bins. To cap it all, somebody sensing the mess has decided to add to it by putting graffiti on the side of the building. Can anybody else out there who thinks this is wrong tell the John Major, the chief executive of the Dulwich Estate to stick his bins ...........back where they belong in the service yard.

In short, what has happened here is that DE has dumped it's problem into the public domain by putting large bins out on the pavement.

Dear all on this thread,
I am in fact Moe not Bert not Chloe nor Alfred or even djnc. I am not as you would say the most computer literate being 63 and have only heard about this West Dulwich Forum and in particular this thread through word of mouth, and thus thought it would be a good idea to present myself onto it.
Firstly, thank you to those for all your support and to those who have criticism, this is completely normal and I take it all on board.
As regards the shop, for the majority of my life I have been serving the community. I trained as a nurse at Guy’s hospital and gained my SRN back in 1967, I’m now also qualified as a GRN and have worked as a nurse for a great deal of my life. In the past five years I have been working in palliative care for many hospitals in London and privately but normally working nights. I decided this was taking a toll on my life and thus decided to open up a City Garden shop with a focus on children, garden games and gifts, so that I could again participate in the local community in which I have lived for 28 years now.
I would love you all to come into the shop and give me your comments in person. I am, shall I say, old fashioned and much more in tune with talking to people face to face and actually getting to know the local community.
I would like to say that I believe I have a range of goods which satisfy all spectrums of West Dulwich and although some things may cater for those with bigger gardens and wallets such as croquet sets we also sell kites, children’s windmills and garden gifts at competitive prices, we also sell all your garden needs for example twine, flower pots, sprays etc.
I, of course, hope that Moe’s Potting Shed will be a success and I need the local community’s support for that: I look forward to meeting you all in the near future. As I said above, I am not particularly computer literate so forgive me but I will not be getting into any further exchanges on this thread, I will leave that all to you. I have enjoyed the posts and it seems you are all very much a lively lot with varied opinions which can only be a good thing.
Kind Regards, Maureen (Moe)

Just wanted to bring this back to the top. Looks like that is a further year of Dulwich Estate doing what it does best - nothing. Once again I would ask what their position would be if a different landlord sat on this crumbling derelict asbestos riddled eyesore. Wouldn't happen in the Village, would it? Shame on you Mr Major and your Trustees who lack the balls to kick you into shape.

What a splendid idea this is. The address board of the church on College Road has been "South Dulwich" for quite some time and renaming the station would simply reflect the true geography of the area. If a stranger gets off the train at Sydenham Hill and asks how long the walk is to Sydenham would they be surprised by the answer?

Does anyone know if this campaign is getting anywhere?
